Culpeper Battlefields State Park is accepting applications for an Interpretive Ranger position. 

Job Summary:

Culpeper Battlefields State Park is seeking a self-motivated and guest-focused Interpretive Ranger to join their team. This individual will work closely with the Park Manager, community organizations, and volunteers to develop and deliver inspiring programs and special events. The programs and events will seek to present exciting and diverse stories from the Civil War era and environmental resources in the form of guided tours, hands-on programs, recreational activities, and more. Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead public interpretive programs.
  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings.
  • Assist with special events, in partnership programs, and community outreach.
  • Assist with event marketing, attendance tracking, and reporting.
  • Attending programming and training at off-site locations.
  • Provide Park visitors with excellent customer service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Comfortable discussing difficult and sensitive historical topics.
  • Must be able to work and hike in all weather and terrains.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a team.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience organizing and conducting public programming at a park, museum, etc.
  • Experience promoting programs using resources like Canva, Flickr, and Microsoft 365.
  • Experience interpreting diverse topics to large groups of people.
  • Experience working with ‘friends’ groups and volunteers.
  • Certification(s) in First Aid/CPR/Interpretive Guide/etc.

Special Instructions:

  • Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
  • Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
  • Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights.  All reservations require a two-night minimum.  Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
